In this recipe, using your muscles to wring out the potato water will keep you fit! We make use of the oven instead of the frying pan. We also use a tea towel as a piece of equipment.
Let’s make some Oven-Fried Potato Latkes 🥔🧅🥚🌿🌾
This is what you will need for this recipe: 🥣🥄
Ingredients 🥔🧅🥚🧂🌿🌾
• 300g Grated Potatoes (1½ Cup)
• ½ White/Brown Onion, grated
• 1 Large Egg
• 1 Teaspoon Salt
• 1 Teaspoon Baking Powder
• 50g Flour (⅓ Cup)
• ½ Cup Vegetable Oil
• 20g Sugar (1½ Tablespoons)
• ¼ Teaspoon Cinnamon
Method 📖
1. Preheat the Oven - Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F)
2. Prepare the Potato and Onion - Peel the potato and onion, then coarsely grate them together.
3. Remove Excess Liquid - Place the grated mixture into a tea towel over a bowl. Wring the tea towel firmly to squeeze out as much liquid as possible.
4. Mix the Ingredients - Transfer the potato-onion mixture into a medium-sized mixing bowl. Crack and check the egg, then add it to the mixture. Stir in the salt, baking powder, and flour until well combined.
5. Heat the Oil - Pour ½ cup of vegetable oil into an ovenproof dish. Place the dish in the oven for 10 minutes to heat the oil.
6. Shape the Latkes - Carefully remove the hot dish from the oven. Using a spoon, ladle portions of the potato mixture into the hot oil, spacing them apart. Flatten each portion slightly with the back of the spoon.
7. Bake the Latkes - Bake the latkes for 14 minutes, then use tongs to flip them over. Bake for another 14 minutes or until both sides are golden brown.
8. Drain the Latkes - Remove the latkes from the dish and place them on paper towels to drain any excess oil.
9. Make the Cinnamon Sugar - In a small bowl, mix the sugar and cinnamon together.
10. Coat the Latkes - Take each latke and coat it in the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
11. Serve and Enjoy - Taste one to enjoy your crispy, sweet latkes! Pack the remaining latkes into a container.
Optional: Serve with homemade applesauce instead of cinnamon sugar.
Don’t Forget! 📌
The wringing out of the tea towel is very important to remove as much excess juices as possible. The grated onion and potato needs to be as dry as possible to make the latkes crispy and brown. If they are soggy, they will remain a paler colour and will take a long time to bake. Having crispy latkes, after all, is what we want for Chanukah!
